Reviving History: A Danish Dream in Southern Italy
A few years back, two Danish couples, Mette and Rolf Hay, and Martin and Bibi Husted Werner, took a bold step into a new life chapter by purchasing Villa Colucci, an 11-bedroom palazzo located in the picturesque region of Puglia, Italy. Although their exploration of the property was conducted over FaceTime, the decision was anything but impulsive; the friends, both well-respected figures in Denmark’s design community, had been long-time admirers of Puglia’s landscape and culture.
The Joint Restoration Project
The couples approached this venture with a vision of creating a home filled with art and thoughtful design. Known for their stunning craftsmanship through their brand Hay and the fashion world, respectively, Mette and Rolf, alongside Martin and Bibi, embarked on a delicate restoration that underscores both respect for history and a modern lifestyle.
Crafting a Sustainable Retreat
Villa Colucci, constructed in the 19th century by the affluent Colucci family, required a blend of historic reverence and modern amenities. Local architect Francesco Mastrorosa was brought on board to seamlessly modernize the villa’s infrastructure while preserving its original charm. Notably, the restoration features sustainable elements, such as excavated water supply and solar panels installed on the roof, aligning the project with contemporary eco-conscious values.
Family Ties in the Transformation
The project also reflects a deep familial connection, as Martin and Bibi’s relatives reside nearby and acted as boots-on-the-ground liaisons during the renovation. Having previously owned a farmhouse in Puglia, the couple brought a wealth of experience with local customs and logistics to the table.
A Thoughtful Collection of Furnishings
Once the architectural updates were complete, the couple relied heavily on their existing collections to furnish Villa Colucci. With three truckloads of furniture and art transported from Copenhagen, they set to work assembling the interiors. Bibi and Rolf were instrumental in crafting a cohesive aesthetic, managing to style the rooms in just three days—a testament to their design acumen.
Availability for Rent: A Unique Experience Awaits
Now that the renovation is complete, Villa Colucci is set to become available for rental, inviting guests to experience a blend of Danish design and Italian heritage set against the breathtaking backdrop of Puglia’s natural beauty. The new owners believe that their vision stands as a testament to living artfully and a reminder of the bonds of friendship that fueled this incredible undertaking. As they say in Italy, Vieni a vedere—come see for yourself.
