Nestled on the serene shores of Vollerup Strand in Denmark, the Harmoni House stands out as a beacon of modern design paired with sustainable living. Crafted by Christoffer Immanuel and Line Thygesen, this low-impact summerhouse encapsulates the beauty of the Danish countryside while minimizing environmental footprints. Partnering with architect Thomas Høyer from Høyer Arkitektur, the couple envisioned a haven that embraces nature while providing a comfortable retreat from their busy lives in Frederiksberg.

Christoffer and Line's desire for a nature-centric retreat stems from their upbringing close to the woods, which instilled in them a deep appreciation for the environment. Their four-year-old son, Helmut, was the impetus for this project, as they aimed to provide him with experiences rooted in nature. "After securing our plot in Vollerup, we committed to constructing a low-impact cabin with my childhood friend, Thomas [Høyer]," reflects Christoffer.
Sustainable Materials: Building with Purpose
The design process of Harmoni House puts a premium on sustainability right from material selection. An impressive 95% of the materials were sourced locally, ensuring that wood, windows, and other essential components are both renewable and regionally accessible. The decision to place the structure on concrete piers, rather than a full concrete foundation, also reflects a conscientious approach, reducing the carbon footprint associated with construction.

The house’s location was chosen with careful consideration. Remarkably, only one tree was removed during the construction process—a commendable feat given the abundance of trees in the area. Christoffer notes, “That wasn’t easy, as there are hundreds of trees out there.” This demonstrates a commitment to preserving local ecosystems while still achieving their architectural goals.
